Desired Changes

  • Change the court experience for tribal members to one of a more positive and concilliatory nature.
  • Reduce rate of recidivism by resolving systematic issues.
  • Reduce incarceration rates of Blood Tribe members.
  • Provide community with more responsibility for resolution of wrongdoings, criminal acts, civil matters and other disputes.

Overall Objectives

  • Utilize Kainai traditional peacemaking customs and values within the Peacemaking Program.
  • Provide a better experience for tribal members, one that will deal with underlying issues that lead to conflicts within the law and wrongdoings that may best be addressed through healing and restoration rather than punishment and retribution.
  • Create options to incarceration, allowing offenders to return to the community with a more positive state of mind rather than reinforced criminal ideals.
  • Create options and enhance services that are provided through child protection agencies allowing families to mediate and address issues outside the Court forum to reach a resolution that is in the best interests of the child, family and community.
  • Address disputes between and/or among community members.
  • Provide healing and restoration for the individual as well as the community and restore harmony and balance in family and community relationships.
